Don’t let back-to-school shopping crash your budget

A startling new survey reveals that back-to-school shopping is putting a serious strain on Canadian families, and you don’t want to be one of those people.

According to the survey results, Canadians are looking to spend $883 per family on back-to-school supplies and clothing! That is $325 more on average than spent on holiday gifts last year!

That’s a big number, and this kind of a bill puts a big strain on many household finances and even 40 per cent of families admit hat it takes months for them to pay off that bill.

It may be because doting moms and dads have a hard time saying, “No.” Over 60 per cent of survey respondents said they care more about making sure their children have everything they need than saving money. [Global News]

You do not want back-to-school to crash your budget or your household funds. So, what can you do to save some money this month in preparation for September? Here’s a few simple tips to save your funds:

  • Set a budget: figure out what figure is reasonable and doable for your family to spend on back-to-school supplies, and stay within it!
  • Reuse: there’s no reason that everything on the list has to be brand new, there are likely plenty of good supplies left over from last year. Go through your inventory before you set a list on things to purchase.
  • Shop used: when it comes to thinks like textbooks, check out local spots that sell used books. Most people don’t realize that textbooks and reference books are often the most donated books, so check used book stores first. Another idea for used supplies is to check out websites like Kijiji and VarageSale, you may be able to find some supplies for cheap or even free.
  • Say “no”: supplies can be necessary in some cases, not not always new. New clothing on the other hand, is a luxury in most cases. Again clothing is something you can also get lucky with on used listing sites like the ones above.
  • Look for deals: in the coming weeks, there will be lots of back-to-school blowouts and specials popping up. Be on the lookout for coupons and sales, and be ready to shop ahead of the crowds.

If you have some other helpful tips, I’d welcome you to share them on social media.
