Election 2015: Where the Parties Stand on the Economy

The federal election is taking place on October 19th across Canada, and you’ve probably noticed social media and online airwaves starting to flood with campaign and political party promises. Since voter registration has already started, it’s time to start wading through all the information you’re probably seeing regarding the parties, leaders and the election itself.

If you’re just getting caught up, here’s a rundown of where the big parties stand on the Canadian economy:
  • Conservative Party: They are looking to add over $1.6-billion towards existing infrastructure in Canada, between this year and next. The current Finance Minister says Budget 2015 will add more than $10-billion into the economy.
  • Liberal Party: They are looking at introducing $60-billion in the next ten years into infrastructure for: public transit, social housing and climate change adaptations.
  • NDP: They are looking to pump $1.5-billion into infrastructure each year by 2019, investing $1.3-billion annually over the next 20 years into transit services. They are also planning to invest money into renewable energy sources as well. The minimum wage would be increased to $15/hour for those who are working in federally regulated industries.
  • Green Party: This party is planning to spend $6.4-billion each year on municipal infrastructure. They would also provide $1-billion per year into cities to hire Canadian youth.
