How to Save Money on Your Summer Vacation

If you’re looking to save some money this summer, don’t worry. You can still enjoy a summer vacation with the whole family without splurging your budget for the month.

Here’s a few tips for saving money on your summer vacation:

  • Stay closer to home: we have a lot of great vacation options right here in Alberta, from camping to cottage country. Staying closer to home will cut down on gas and other additional expenses.
  • Rent from owners: instead of opting for a hotel or property management company, renting direct from the owner saves you money. You can find great vacation properties on sites like Airbnb or VRBO.
  • Maximize what you carry on: almost all airlines charge a baggage fee now, so take advantage of carry-ons if you can. Bringing your own snacks on planes and entertainment will save you from expensive airline movies and food as well.
  • Plan ahead for food: eating out at restaurants every day (especially for the whole family) can really add up quickly. Vacation in places where you have access to a kitchen and can make your own food.
  • Go with friends or family: booking a multi-family vacation will help split the costs of getting a bigger spot for less money. You can split the cost of a full cottage with another family and then you’ll have a kitchen, etc.
  • Set a budget: set a budget before you go for the trip, which outlines the amount of spending money each person has per day, and do not go over it.
  • Plan a staycation: instead of leaving town, enjoy time with your family at home. Try things like backyard camping, visiting some tourist spots around the city or hosting friends and family over. Check out Visit Calgary for local inspiration.
